Why storytelling and podcasting are great strategies to connect with your customers

Do you share stories in your podcast content? Have you ever thought about how a podcast based on the stories you tell could be a HUGE benefit to your business?

We want to explore with you how a storytelling-based podcast can create HUGE success and connection. So, let’s break it down together!

This week is all about creating storytelling content, sharing experiences through your podcast and all of the types of stories you can tell in your business.

So, if you're keen to learn more make sure you keep on reading.

How to create a storytelling content strategy with podcasting

Starting a podcast doesn't have to be as intimidating as it may seem. You might be thinking “How am I supposed to make consistent recordings that are an hour each about my niche?” well, you don’t!

A podcast doesn't have to be exactly around your niche in every episode you record. As long as you relate what you’re talking about back to your business values, you’re good as gold.

If you don’t have a podcast or maybe don’t know where to start with your podcast content marketing, that’s okay. As long as you know what you want to do with your podcast and work towards those objectives, you’re already there!

However, an amazing place to start with what to talk about is telling stories. Storytelling is the best way to connect with your audience and fill up time whilst you are talking (because we know that can feel like the hardest part).

Give your audience 40 minutes to an hour with YOU to get to know your brand - now you’re on your way to attracting listeners and creating a killer podcast.

How to create a storytelling based podcast

So, when we talk about the types of podcasts, there are two formats overall: A storytelling-led podcast or a podcast with storytelling elements.

Sounds pretty similar right? Whilst both contain the need for planning, strategizing, and podcast content marketing, they do hold a lot of differences.

1. Storytelling lead podcast

Known as a micro-genre, this is a podcast (like Lead Balloon) that is just about storytelling. Because of the specific structure that it follows, this type of podcast might take a bit more planning and time to get it right.

To start, you need to build the foundations of any story “Beginning, middle, and end” but the end result is always unique. For example, if you were a business coach, your podcast could be based on business stories, your business, or the stories of other businesses.

If you were a photographer, your podcast would be behind the camera. Stories of photoshoots.

This type of podcast isn't really about educating (but will through lessons more than tips and tricks).

2. Storytelling elements in the podcast

This type of podcast is one with stories threaded throughout it, just like the Content Queen Podcast where we share a story before the tips or tricks.

It isn’t based all around stories but rather gives an element of storytelling to paint a picture.

If you’re looking to use this kind of structure, we have some ideas below to help you!

The 8 types of stories you can tell on your podcast!

Storytelling plays an important role in how we present content and a podcast is no different.

But what stories can we tell? Well, let’s have a look!

Your stories:

  1. Incorporate a weekly update into your podcast

  2. Share experiences on topics in your niche and give tips

  3. Create a podcast ALL about just your stories

Others stories:

  1. Client stories (testimonials to share experiences)

  2. Guests to share stories on a topic in your niche

  3. Analogies to explain a concept

Hypothetical stories

  1. Fiction based content to explain concepts

  2. Putting the audience in the shoes of the pain point you want to discuss

Storytelling and podcasting are great strategies to connect with your customers

When you build up your podcast, it is also a good idea to build your podcast avatar! What do we mean by this? Predict and know WHO is going to be listening.

You can do this by adding stories you know they’ll want to hear. You can even directly ask someone you know in your podcast avatar if they would like an episode on XYZ.

Create your episodes based on what your audience wants, that’s how you can build up listeners and work on connecting with your target customers.

Final thoughts

When you are thinking about starting a podcast, or maybe you’re looking to give yours a revamp, try storytelling!

You can tell a mixture of your stories, the stories of others, hypothetical stories, and even stories that help your audience to relate to you!

No matter what your business is or what services you provide, think about how you can add more stories to your content!
