Content marketing is one of those things, you either love it or hate it. Regardless of the online space, we now can't get away without creating any type of content for our online business.

But there are loads of misconceptions and myths about content marketing. Many things we think "should" work or "should" happen to help us reach our audience within the online space.

That is why we are here to share some tough truths about content marketing with you...

Some may give you a sense of relief, others might make you a bit frustrated. But these truths will help you grow your business using platforms like social media, blogs, podcasts, etc.

So, come along with us as we get real and visit the 10 hard truths about content marketing.

The things you need to know about the world of content marketing

We all know and have seen the posts, blogs, and emails about how you can become successful in your business overnight by doing X, Y, or Z. These are the posts and brands that tell you all you need is one magical ingredient to build the business you want, and while you might hate us for saying this, that isn’t reality.

The truth is, content marketing is a long game, there is no one secret to get you that success! That is what we are exploring with you in this blog because even though the truth can be hard to hear, these are the truths you need to know to reach your goals!

1. Success won’t just fall into your lap overnight.

a. As we mentioned before, content marketing can’t just be conquered through one element or one ‘trick’, it takes time, patience, and hard work. Remember, good things come to those who wait (and work for it).

2. You might not be able to do it alone forever.

a. Because of the MANY things involved in content marketing like planning, writing, researching, analytics, scheduling, reviewing, and more, sometimes it can get to a stage in business where it becomes too much for one person. This is where outsourcing can really help! Outsourcing the workload to freelancers or hiring an employee for your business may seem scary at first, but it can allow your schedule to lighten and you to focus on the things you love doing in your business. If you’re thinking of outsourcing, Content Queen can help with our talented group of freelancers ready to push your content to the next level. Click the button below if you’re interested!

3. You need that human element

a. Adding your own unique stories and experiences to your content could be what your content marketing needs. You’d be surprised at the amazing benefits of showing up for your audience, telling your story, and relating it back to your content. Storytelling is a valuable skill to have, if you’d like to tap into your own storytelling, check out our storytelling guide below by clicking the button!

4. It always pays to have a documented strategy

a. Having a strategy around your content, what you will create and the topics you want to address really is a game changer. Rather than just posting whenever and whatever you feel like, have a content marketing strategy in place to document and create change. Don’t forget to also include your values, when you want to post, what topics you want to focus on and what stories you can link back to. 5. Finding the channels that work for you should be one of your biggest priorities

a. When you market your business from the RIGHT channel, that is when you will start connecting with the aligned communities. That is when you will begin to attract the right audience who want to buy from you! There is no use showing up on all of the channels just because you think you should, it will save you so much time and energy to find out the channels that are best suited to your business. To do this, try taking the Content Queen Content Channel Quiz, it only takes 5 minutes and it’s free!

6. There is NO blueprint for success

a. Every business is unique, every business has its own goals and every business has a different way of operating. What does this mean? It means that there cannot be just one formula that every brand can follow to reach its goals. Your business is one of a kind, so lean into that, find what works for you, test, trial, and measure and create your own blueprint for success.

7. Going “viral” isn’t everything

a. There is a huge myth in content marketing that going viral is going to equal money and success online, however, this isn’t the case. If you go viral it doesn't mean your business will be 100% successful. Going viral doesn't need to be the big goal of creating online, it’s better to focus on creating original content that speaks to your audience’s needs.

8. Find what you want to be known for

a. Here is an exercise for you: take a pen and paper or open the notes on your phone and write down what you want to be known for. You can write a list of as many things as you like but then eventually bring this down to 3-4 things. This isn’t about personal attributes like being “caring” or “thoughtful” (while those are lovely) but it is instead about certain topics you really relate with and value that you want people to recognise you for. Think about what your niche is and start from there.

9. Consistency really is key

a. You need to keep showing up! Consistency is all about routine and having your strategy in place to help your content run like a well-oiled machine. Even when content doesn't seem like it’s getting the reach you want, keep creating and keep sharing your story! We always like to say, give it at least a 3-month trial and if it still hasn't gained traction, look at the analytics, see what is working and what isn’t and make changes based on this.

10. It is about finding what works for you and your audience

a. Your content is exactly that: YOUR content. It is what you love to create, what works for your business and what your audience aligns with. This uniqueness is what sets you apart from other brands that may be in your niche, so don’t shy away from that. Embrace your individual stories, and your experiences and, of course, speak to what your audience wants to see! Test, trial and measure and once you find what works for your business, really dive into that and see what you can get out of it!
