Content Marketing in 2023

2023 is creeping up very quickly and with trends and strategies constantly evolving, it’s hard to tell what that will look like in the new year, but that’s the fun of it! 

While not all will work for your business, let's go through some of the things we think will happen in 2023 in the content marketing world. 

It is time for you to think about what MAY or MAY NOT work in your business for the new year just around the corner!

What content marketing looks like in the new year 

DISCLAIMER: We want to be very clear that these are just our thoughts, at the end of the day it’s important to use what works for you! Coming into the new year, make sure you are looking at your analytics on all platforms, testing, trialling and measuring your content and then deciding for yourself what you want to use in 2023.

  • Trends

This may sound a bit strange, but with the rise of TikTok and similar forms of content, trends seem to be trending right now among business owners! While following trends or using trending sounds is great to do once in a while, it probably shouldn’t be used too much going into the new year.

Why is this? Well, as mentioned in this week’s podcast which you can check out here, I will always believe that the best content you can create is content unique to you. After all, this is the content that sets you and your business apart from the rest. So yes, trends are fun but to speak to your target audience and make sure the right people are finding you on your platforms, find your own format and groove of content and stick with it! 

  • SEO

Search Engine Optimisation and keywords are becoming more and more important as the online space becomes more saturated, and people are now starting to use social media as a search engine. So in 2023, start thinking about the keywords people would be searching for and add them to your captions, share them in your videos etc. This is how you can create more visibility for your business!   

  • Long-form content

Short-form content is going to be challenged in the new year by the re-appearance of longer-form content. Now, we aren’t saying it’s going to disappear, because our attention spans as humans always change, we are just saying that we may start to sway more towards long-form content.

Even newer platforms like TikTok, which started as a strictly short-form content platform, are adopting the option to create long-form videos. We are seeing that people want more from what they are consuming, so if you haven’t yet considered this for your business and the direction of your content, maybe start to get some inspiration! 

What we like to do is use short-form content to direct to our longer-form content channel. This is a super effective way to direct traffic through your platforms and really connect with your target audience.

So, why not try Youtube, blogging or even longer TikTok videos in the new year? 

  • Storytelling with strategy

You may have heard us talk about storytelling once or twice (or maybe a thousand times) and how amazing it can be for your business, well, this is still our message, BUT here is a way you can elevate it!

Adding a strategy to your storytelling is the way to go in 2023, not only does it push your content to the next level, but it gives your target audience a reason to stick around. In the new year, think about how you can make your stories intentional; how can you promote what you are selling at the moment, how can you reach the pain points of your audience, or even how can you add a call to action to lead your audience to an offer.

This is specifically helpful when you are launching. Whether you are launching through email marketing or social media content, think about how you can add a story to elevate that launch.  

Keep these things in mind to start your content marketing off strong in the new year.

  • Less is more 

With your content marketing in 2023, think about how you can boil this down to focus on not only the things you love in your business but focussing on the things that really work for you.

But what does this mean? Well, it truly comes down to each individual business, but this could mean:

  • Fewer channels that you are actively engaging on and using

  • Less content. With this, think about repurposing and how you can pull as much content out of one podcast or one blog, and utilise that on your other channels

  • Fewer aspects that you want your business to be known for (really think about this and specify it)

  • Focussing on less at one time (whether this is goals, platforms, topics etc. (This one is up to you)

In the new year, we want to work smarter, not harder! You’ve done the work, now think how you can repurpose and niche down to succeed. 

  • Doing your own thing 

There is no use in owning a business and spending time creating content if you don’t actually enjoy what you do. 2023 is all about doing the things in your business that work for you and your goals and, of course, bring you joy.

Now, this process will feel different for everyone, it is ever-evolving and changing along with our business, but that is the beauty of it. This is why we recommend creating a strategy around your content, one that you can follow for 3 months, measure, and then adapt and change to what works and what you like doing. Really, we want you to think about what works for you and your business, not what works for someone else in your niche or what other people are telling you should work for you, but what actually helps your business. 

Maybe Facebook isn’t working for you because you don’t have the energy for it, maybe Instagram Reels are not getting the views you want and are becoming boring, maybe Youtube is becoming a chore rather than a fun process - all of this is OK! Give your strategy a chance to work with each platform in the new year, but if after 3 months it simply does not interest you, try something else and find what you enjoy. After all, it is your business and you need to love what you do, that is what is most important!
